On October 18th BioEngage hosted the first Industry Mixer in preparation for the upcoming SEBA Career Fair. There were 8 companies in attendance including: Juno Therapeutics, Accenture, WL Gore, Physio-Control, Philips, Pacific BioMarkers, Just Biotherapeutics and Becton-Dickinson. Over 87 students attended this event, making it one of the most successful BioEngage events thus far.
The night started off with 6 companies (Physio-Control, Philips, WL Gore, BD, Accenture and Juno Therapeutics) giving brief 10 minute “info sessions” and discussing their current job openings. After the info sessions, students and company reps spent the remaining time mingling and networking in the Foege lobby over refreshments and light hor d’oeuvres. Many of the students were able to make valuable connections with the companies in attendance.
BioEngage is planning to hold another Industry Mixer in February 2017 in preparation for the Internship Career Fair. Look for more information on this event in the coming months…
Stephen Probert, UW ME alumnus (BS 05, MS 07) and teammate, presented a company PowerPoint to share with BioE students on what the culture is like at WL Gore, and what the majority of their medical products are. Stephen has been with Gore for nine years and his teammate 10 years. They described all the uses of Gore materials and brought a bin full of stents, tubes, and patches to pass around the table. The students were able to talk with Stephen about technology, product design, internships, resume formatting, and interview techniques; to name a few. Our students loved the opportunity to have this intimate discussion with a leading biotech company.
On October 10th, UW Bioengineering’s BioEngage hosted a campus visit from Dr. Xi Wang, Head of Philips China R&D and Head of Philips Research China. Dr. Wang spent lunchtime meeting with representatives from the College of Engineering and UW Bioengineering to discuss the potential in establishing collaboration and exchange programs within UW Bioengineering. In the afternoon, Dr. Wang gave a formal presentation to current BioE students about Philips and Philips Research China. During the presentation students heard about the history of Philips’s development and their global involvement over the years and were introduced to the numerous efforts in R&D China. After the presentation, Dr. Wang answered questions from the audience regarding the promising future of Philips as well as obstacles in the Chinese healthcare market. Dr. Wang finished up his afternoon with interviews with potential UW applicants for Philips current open positions and sat down and talked with students in more detail about his personal experiences and his path to success.
